Restoring Smiles with Dental Crowns in Springfield,MO
If you're self-conscious about your smile due to cracked, broken, decayed or worn teeth, we can bring back your healthy, natural-looking smile with dental crowns. Also called porcelain crowns, these play an important role in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry treatments. Although a filling can restore a small defect in a tooth, a crown is the most durable and strongest way to restore any tooth with extensive damage, for the long term. With all the materials and techniques modern dentistry has to offer, your crown from Dr. Olson will be totally natural looking and completely comfortable.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Additional benefits of crowns are their ability to correct bite problems, close spaces between teeth, change the angulations of teeth, and they can be used to replace missing teeth permanently, as part of a bridge, or over an implant. Also, if you have a tooth that has recently required root canal therapy, Dr. Olson can place a crown over the treated tooth to shield it from further damage and strengthen your tooth, so it can withstand the pressure of biting and chewing.
Understanding the Dental Crown Process
At Olson Family Dental, we do crowns meticulously, so you can be certain that yours is of the highest quality. Yes, there are faster ways to give a patient a crown—some dentists offer systems that can make a crown in a couple of hours right in their own office. Dr. Olson, however, prefers to work with our trusted dental lab in order to guarantee the quality of your crown. He believes that in the hands of a skilled ceramist, you’ll have a dental crown that is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
Preparing Your Tooth
When you come to our office for a crown, we'll first make sure you're completely comfortable before we begin treatment. (Need some help relaxing? Mention this when scheduling your appointment, and Dr. Olson will discuss our sedation dentistry with you.) Then we’ll take an impression of your bite in the area of the affected tooth, so our lab can create a crown that matches your unique occlusion. Once the tooth and surrounding tissue are anesthetized, Dr. Olson will prepare the tooth, which necessitates reducing the size of your tooth so the crown fits seamlessly between your adjacent teeth. When this is completed, another impression is necessary, so the crown sets properly on your newly formed tooth.
Bonding Your Permanent Crown
You'll wear a temporary crown while the dental lab completes the permanent dental crown. In about two weeks, you'll return to our office where Dr. Olson will adhesively bond your new custom-crafted crown into place. If necessary, he’ll smooth any higher points or a surface that feels rough to your tongue.
