If you’re considering dental implants to rebuild your smile, the first step is a consultation with your dentist. During this appointment, you may hear some unfamiliar terms related to the implant process. To help you navigate this journey with confidence, here’s a guide to essential dental implant terminology.

Abutment

An abutment is a small connector attached to the top of a dental implant. It provides support for a crown, bridge, or denture, ensuring a secure and stable fit.

Abutment Teeth

These natural teeth support a dental bridge or partial denture. They play a crucial role in anchoring prosthetic teeth and maintaining proper function and aesthetics.

Ceramic

Ceramic is a material used in some dental implants due to its natural appearance. It comes in various shades, including ivory, to blend seamlessly with existing teeth.

Crown

A crown, or cap, replaces a single missing tooth. It can be attached to a dental implant or an existing tooth to restore function and appearance.

Dentures

Dentures are a traditional tooth replacement option. While some are removable for cleaning, implant-supported dentures offer improved stability and a more natural feel.

Endosteal Implant

The most common type of dental implant, an endosteal implant, is placed directly into the jawbone using screws, plates, or cylinders to support prosthetic teeth.

Implant

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia post surgically placed into the jawbone. It integrates with the bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a strong foundation for replacement teeth.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the process where the implant fuses with the jawbone, providing durability and stability for long-term tooth replacement.

Subperiosteal Implant

A subperiosteal implant sits on top of the jawbone rather than being embedded within it. This type is ideal for patients with insufficient bone who cannot undergo traditional implant procedures.

Titanium

Titanium is the most commonly used material for dental implants due to its strength, biocompatibility, and low risk of allergic reactions.

Zirconia

For patients allergic to titanium, zirconia implants offer a metal-free alternative. They also provide a natural appearance and help reduce bacteria buildup around the gums.

Knowing these dental implant terms will help you communicate effectively with your dentist and feel more confident about your treatment. The more informed you are, the better prepared you’ll be to achieve a healthy smile!
